Caylan had just turned 20 years of age on July 4, 2004. He had been working in B.C. thoroughly enjoying his job out in the wilderness. He had passed his examinations as a fire fighter. In his skill tests, he came in second for strength and endurance. Caylan is not a large framed young man; therefore, this spoke volumes to the physical condition he was in. It was this strength that saved his live when enduring 8 agonizing weeks in the Saskatoon Royal University Hospital. During his stay in the hospital, 7 were in the Intensive Care Unit. The pain and suffering, I witnessed him endure during those long agonizing days, broke my heart in two.

On July 30, 2004, en route to a Candle Lake Volley Ball tournament in Saskatchewan, at 2:00 A. M. in a single motor vehicle accident, both my sons Christopher and Caylan Boyse were injured. The accident occurred between Rosetown and Saskatoon. Caylan had his spine severed in seven locations, head injuries, five broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and many deep lacerations. There are now rods and screws fixing the upper and middle thoracic spine through levels of T1, T2, T3, T7, T8 and T9. At level of T5 and T6, there is increased sclerosis. His brother Christopher had two cracked ribs, cut shoulder, severe whiplash and post traumatic distress disorder.

Caylan's name is Gaelic for "Fire of Spirit". Therefore, one could hypothesize or philosophize, that his spirit was ablaze with the will to live. His grit and determination pulled him through the tragic circumstances. With his positive attitude, Caylan has continued to grow and not stagnate. He has many goals that are fuelled by his passion to work in the social justice field by advocating and assisting the multitude. For him it was all about making the difference by bringing about collective change. Three days before the surgeons, first attempt at surgery for Caylan in August 2004, Caylan was lying immobilized in the hospital hanging onto life by a thread. It was at this moment he stated, if we were to survive the surgery, he would like to start the Caylan Boyse Foundation. In addition, because of his love for music, he would start Calgary City Hard Core. What is amazing is that by the age of 21years both the foundation and the business are a reality!
The Caylan Boyse Foundation is about bringing awareness to the public on youth with spinal cord injury, while Calgary City Hard Core promotes the alternative music scene, while bringing attention (education) to individuals with spinal cord injury. The power is in the attitude. Caylan has got the power with the attitude to create change. The energy is in motion with a constant blaze being fuelled by his determination to make change.
